Lifetime of Salary Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Most Affluent 10%, Study Says

Based on fresh analysis, the typical earner in the UK would need over five decades of income to reach the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Widening Wealth Gap Over Time

This research reviewed financial assets data from the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken 38 years' worth of average worker salary to join the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead involved with the study observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a average worker saving all their earnings throughout their career would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The analysis discovered that the difference between the net worth of the average person and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1 million in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by recent times.

The analyst added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as financial progression in Britain is low – people that start life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the financial disparity widening in absolute terms, the share of overall assets in the UK held by the wealthiest families – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," according to the study.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK surged from three times the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Wealth Inequality

So-called "passive" appreciation, by means of growing real estate costs and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, according to the report.

These gains generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Regional Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed stark geographic differences, with the median value of wealth in recent years standing at £290,000 in south-east England, where property prices have generally grown substantially, versus £110,000 in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Impact

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the data shows countless homes were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, though. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
