The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
